Dr. Luciana Vanni Gatti is an enthusiastic Amazon scientist. Dedicated the last two decades to understanding the role of the Amazon in the global carbon cycle, and how ongoing and future climate change and other human impacts, such as deforestation, and biomass burning are affecting the Amazon's ability to act as a carbon “sink”. Focused on the collection of air samples aboard light aircraft above Amazon forests followed by meticulous, high-precision measurements of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4) at the INPE laboratory (LaGEE). This long-term study was the basis for understanding patterns of greenhouse gas emissions over the Amazon, and the temporal and regional variability. She led three important scientific publications at Nature, as the first author, which has provided a unique perspective on Amazon's greenhouse gas sources and sinks often challenging previous conventional wisdom.
