SIM SÃO PAULO AND AHA! PROMOTE ACTIONS FOR MENTAL HEALTH IN THE MUSIC MARKET

We need to talk about Mental Health in the music business.

The WHO (World Health Organization) defines mental health as a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with everyday stresses, work productively, and becomes able to contribute to his or her community. It is also a determining factor for good physical condition and quality of life. Health is not just the absence of disease, but a sense of well-being and wholeness. Taking care of mental health is essential.

And this is not always as simple as it sounds. Various factors such as stress, conflicts, pressure in the work environment, financial problems, disabilities, and illnesses are factors that can negatively influence our mental health. Unfortunately, these problems are not always recognized, and are often treated as weakness or lack of ability.

Although nowadays there is a greater concern with these issues, as well as a variety of actions aimed at mental health, some productive sectors still lack greater attention, as in the case of the music industry.

According to a survey published in 2018 by the Music Industry Research Association, more than 50% of musicians reported some symptom of depression, anxiety, and even self-destructive thoughts, a number twice as high as in the rest of the population. Another survey, conducted by Swedish digital distribution platform Record Union in 2019, pointed to even more alarming figures, exceeding 70%.

When we remember artists like Kurt Cobain, Chorão, and Amy Winehouse, we have an idea of how violent and destructive the demands of the artistic sector can be. Dealing with fame, success, money, loneliness, and trusting relationships with managers and producers is not always easy. And for beginning artists there is also all the anxiety and expectation of building a career and a series of obstacles that cannot always be overcome.

And here it is important to remember that there are many other professionals in the music industry chain who suffer other types of pressure in hostile environments, gigantic workloads, lack of sleep, instability, financial difficulties, etc.

Just talking about mental health in the music industry is not enough. More than ever it is necessary to create spaces, stimulate discussions, promote changes and provide support to all professionals, regardless of their place in the music industry, and nobody, so far, has taken this look in a structured, propositional and active way.

With this in mind, SIM São Paulo has developed a series of actions in partnership with AHA! Desenvolvimento de Potenciaisa company dedicated to disseminating an integral look for the life and health of people. Through the development of Sensitive Intelligence and the use of art, culture, and self-knowledge, AHA! will participate in the 2021 edition of SIM with a program created exclusively for the music market.

The program includes online and face-to-face activities from December 2nd to 4th, which will address topics such as self-knowledge, confidence building, and assertive communication.
