(Otavio Sousa e Marko Panayotis, Brasil, 2016, 80 min)

Time Will Burn tells the almost forgotten history of the Brazilian alternative rock at the beginning of the 90s. Independent bands that played their guitars at high volume, sang in english and produced their own shows were responsible for the making of an urgent and visceral music scene that got the attention of the media. An intense period in the brazilian music starred by bands such as Pin Ups, Killing Chainsaw, Second Come and Mickey Junkies. A chapter that was hidden is finally captured in a documentary.

8:15pm to 9:00pm

CONCERT || BOOGARINS

@ Musicbox / Rua Nova de Carvalho 24

Meet Boogarins, from Goiâna, Brazil. They are psychadelic pop, with steady and even drum grooves, guitars playing melodic repetitions through clouds of reverb and hazy, slow-release, enlightened-sounding vocals. There is a Brazilian psychedelic-rock tradition, for sure. But Boogarins don’t sound beholden to the documents of it. It’s not a band of formalists doing homage work. It’s something greater. Besides that, Boogarins have had a great connection with the Portuguese public, having stepped on national stages several times, either at Musicbox or Rock in Rio.

9:00pm to 9:45pm

CONCERT || O GRINGO SOU EU

@ Tokyo / Rua Nova de Carvalho 12

Frankão is O Gringo Sou Eu, a Brazilian musician based in Oporto who has been dedicated to the fusion of traditional and contemporary music from both sides of the Atlantic. Between fado and baile funk this design is truly refreshing and its portability makes it easily exportable.

9:15pm to 10:00pm

CONCERT || RICARDO DIAS GOMES

@ Viking / Rua Nova de Carvalho 7

A respected innovator on the Rio de Janeiro music scene since the mid 90s, Gomes is best known for his work on the trio of critically-acclaimed albums Caetano Veloso released in the late 00s: Cê (2006), Zii and Zie (2009) and Abraçaço (2012). Playing bass on these modern milestones in post-Tropicalia, and subsequently touring the world with Veloso, inspired Gomes to record his debut album -11, released in 2015.

11:45pm to 00:30am

CONCERT || P.L.I.N.T

@ River Rouge / Praça de Dom Luís I

P.L.I.N.T – Pablo Lapidusas International Trio is the first project other than the solo format of the Brazilian/Argentinian pianist Pablo Lapidusas. The trio formed in 2014 in collaboration with the Cuban bassist Leo Espinosa and the Portuguese drummer Marcelo Araújo. The trio project also earned a nomination for Jazzahead 2016 (Germany) as one of 16 projects representing European instrumental music, performing a showcase and getting excellent reviews. They also have an intense pedagogical activity, ministering workshops and masterclasses through Brazil, Portugal, India, Israel and Argentina.

The inequality, poverty, misery, illness, corruption and other capitalism effects were feedstock for the compositions. As a DJ/producer, he performed in more than 10 countries in the last 10 years. Now, he shows the influence of the rhythms he collected during this career, specially African, Latin and Brazilian music, blended with indie-rock-electronic-influenced songs as a bed for his sharp political ideas.
